I first learned about New Voters through another intern I went to high school with. I took part in a text bank project and gained knowledge of the New Voters message of youth civic engagement. After only three weeks of working with the organization, I've had the opportunity to hone vital communications, leadership, and time management abilities. What I have valued most, however, is working as a part of a strong team to impact youth across the country.
Engaging and organizing young voters is one of my main duties as a Communications Intern. My position has taught me the importance of customizing messages and knowing how to connect with youth voters across our focus states. Accordingly, I have had the chance to nurture my verbal and written communication abilities while adjusting to the diverse interests and needs of various demographic groups. Through my experience, I have been able to communicate ideas more clearly and learn the value of empathy, active listening, and virtual interaction.
My internship with New Voters has also handed me several opportunities to assume leadership positions as far as planning meetings and coordinating assignments. By forcing me to step outside of my comfort zone and take on more demanding tasks, I've been able to improve my decision-making abilities and accept accountability for my work. Additionally, I have experienced the value of leading by example and inspiring my team to pursue dedicated, enthusiastic work. II believe that the internship has enhanced my organizational abilities, which I developed while managing various assignments, department deadlines, and working with others to meet our team goals. During the first day of my internship, I quickly realized that productive cooperation was essential to attaining common objectives. The value of collaboration became clear as the Communications cohort planned outreach activities and hatched ideas for our social media campaigns. Consequently, I've improved my capacity to cooperate well with others and have also learned the value of acknowledging different viewpoints, as well as the skill of compromise. Each assignment is a reflection of my team’s collective efforts.
My time as a Communications Intern at New Voters has been an invaluable experience that has shaped both my personal and professional growth. Through outreach skills, leadership opportunities, and a responsibility to the Communications Team, I have acquired a diverse skill set that I hope contributes to my future career and the success of New Voters. The internship has not only equipped me with essential communication and organizational skills but has also instilled in me a passion for civic engagement and a commitment to working with and empowering others. I am grateful for the mentorship and support I have received during my time at New Voters, and I am eager to continue my journey of making a positive impact in the world of communications and youth activism.
